Peace process and peacebuilding in Afghanistan was the name of the workshop organized by the Afghan delegation at this year’s World Social Forum (WSF). Raz Mohammad Dalili and Sayed Ihsanullah Dileri from Sanayee Development Foundation (SDF) conducted this workshop on 18 January 2004. A great number of people from different countries of the world participated.

This was one of the events which the Afghan delegation registered at the WSF. Raz Mohammad Dalili focused on the following points in his presentation:

  • Afghan Conflict Timeline
  • Peace Process and Peace Building in Afghanistan
  • Challenges
  • Recommendations
  • Question and Answers

In his analytical view of the Afghan conflict timeline, Mr. Dalili mentioned the start of the Afghan conflict right from the fall of the government in the hands of the former Soviet Union backed government in Afghanistan. “This was the period the Afghan Mujahideen groups started to emerge in the country” he added.

He reiterated the point that unless and until we start building peace from grassroots level, it is quite unrealistic to think of bringing peace in Afghanistan. He pointed out the inclusion of peace education in national curriculum can help build peace at the grassroots level. He further mentioned that peace building must exist in the form of a process. It will not work out only if we depend on arranging workshops, seminars and conferences on peace. We need to work on some solid and practical grounds in order to build peace in Afghanistan.

Mr. Dalili mentioned that the projects undertaken by the government and the international and national NGOs lack the element of peace. Moreover, he mentioned that the presence of warlords in the governments is another big challenge lying ahead for all Afghans. The drug business is another big issue yet to be addressed seriously. The lack of interest of the government in including peace education in the national curriculum of is another challenge we have to meet.

In order to make this workshop as comprehensive as possible, Ms. Sheenkai Zaheen from AWEC and Dr. Safi from the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development spoke on this occasion on the problem of women and health in the country. Ms. Sheenkai highlighted the major issues facing the women in Afghanistan. Dr. Safi mentioned and explained war as social disease in Afghanistan and mentioned the challenges yet to be addressed in the health sector.

These discussions created many questions in the mind of participants. In the Q&A session, Mr. Dileri, Dr. Safi and Mr. Dalili answered to the queries of the participants. At the end, some of the Afghan participants in the workshop also expressed their views regarding their country and the progress made so far. Ms. Sadia Fatime spoke about the other major and positive developments which have taken place in the Afghanistan. Ms. Hossai Wardak from the Afghan Youth Foundation for Unity spoke on the problems facing Afghan youth.

At the end, Raz Mohammad Dalili thanked the participants for their time and attention and concluded his workshop saying the following message:
“Let us all work for peace all over the world and build global peace network so that we leave a better life free of violence. Let us all work for another world which is the motto of the WSF.
