Survey report of Afghan refugees residing in Islamabad

As per program of HRCP Afghan Desk Mr. Tariq Ahmad khan (Provincial coordinator Core Groups, HRCP Peshawar office), Mr. Syed Shamsuddin (Coordinator HRCP, Islamabad office) and Mr. Said Usman Sanjish (Asst. Coordinator Afghan Desk) conducted survey on Current Situation of Afghan Refugees in Islamabad on November 24, 2004 and prepared the following report.

One Day Consultation Resolution Regarding Afghan Refugees' Immediate Problems

Afghan Desk of HRCP and the Afghan- Pakistan Peoples Friendship Association organized one-day consultation on "Immediate Problems of Afghan Refugees and its ways of solution" in Peshawar on 29th of April 2004. Prominent figures of the national NGOs, socio-political activists and media representatives made their active participation. This consultation opened with opining speech of Mr. Afrasiab Khattak Ex.Cahir HRCP and chair of APPFA. After his speech, issues regarding the Afghan refugees and their future in Afghanistan and Pakistan were discussed with appropriate participation of the Afghan and Pak scholars and human rights activists.

Afghan Desk HRCP on behalf of Afghanistan- Pakistan People Friendship Association organized a one-day seminar on Sustainable Repatriation in Chitral on September 29,2003. More than sixty people of the educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, mass media representatives and member of the business community actively participated in this seminar and expressed their points of view regarding sustainable repatriation and improvement of relations between the people of the two countries. Miserable life condition of Afghan refugees in brick kilns

In the surrounding area of Peshawar there are hundreds of brick kilns where the Afghan refugees are working as bounded laborers. According to an estimate, 53000 families’ survival is through these brick kilns. Total population will be reached to three hundreds thousand if we take six people average of each family. Each family income is 2500 rupees per month which they are receiving from the brick kilns owners, which is insufficient for the survival of six people of their family.
