AWN with financial collaboration of WomenKind conducted a three days workshop on “Legal rights for women in Jail”. This workshop was conducted for awareness of women’s rights, child rights, human rights in a civil society and women’s rights in Islam. The target group of the workshop was the women that are in Jail.

The workshop was conducted in Kabul Jail women’s section from 12-02-2005 to 14-02-2005 for 5 hours daily. The objective of this workshop was to raise awareness of legal rights for those women that do not know about their rights and responsibilities of their family, the community and even their own self. The resource persons of the workshop were Ms. Rahela and Ms. Afzon, AWN trainers.

The workshop was very effective and the participants of the workshop took active participation. Expressing their views about the problems they were facing, one of the participants said, “We have lots of problem in jail and we want that any organization or the Ministry of Women affairs take the responsibility of the women in jail because no one pay attention to problems of women there. If they complain about the Jail workers, they never listen to them and never behave with them as human. They can not meet their families and children and when their families bring something for them like food, clothes, medicines etc. the jailer and the workers, that are responsible for them, get money for that and even then if they wish they will give them half of their own things”.

Some of the women in Jail were even unaware about their offense and the punishment.

The participants commended the workshop and thanked AWN for conducting such a workshop
